Background of the Study
Green supply chain practices (GSCP) are increasingly adopted by organizations worldwide as part of their efforts to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability. GSCP encompass strategies such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, eco-friendly packaging, and sustainable sourcing, which aim to balance environmental responsibility with economic objectives (Ibrahim & Adewale, 2024). In Nigeria, companies like Dangote Group, a leading conglomerate with operations spanning cement production, agriculture, and energy, are at the forefront of adopting green supply chain practices.

In Kano State, where Dangote Group has substantial operations, the implementation of GSCP is critical to addressing environmental challenges such as waste management, pollution, and resource depletion. Despite the benefits of GSCP, the adoption of these practices often faces significant barriers, including high implementation costs, inadequate infrastructure, and limited regulatory support (Adebayo & Adamu, 2024). Understanding these challenges is essential for organizations to develop effective strategies for sustainable supply chain management.

While there is growing awareness of green supply chain practices globally, there is limited research on their implementation in Nigeria, particularly in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. This study examines the challenges of implementing green supply chain practices at Dangote Group in Kano State, providing insights into the barriers and opportunities associated with sustainability in the Nigerian context.

Statement of the Problem
The growing emphasis on sustainability has made green supply chain practices a priority for organizations worldwide. However, in Nigeria, companies like Dangote Group face numerous challenges in implementing these practices, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to eco-friendly technologies, and high costs. These barriers hinder the widespread adoption of GSCP and limit their effectiveness in addressing environmental and operational challenges (Aliyu et al., 2024).

Although GSCP offer significant benefits, such as cost savings, improved brand reputation, and compliance with environmental regulations, their implementation in regions like Kano State remains problematic. The absence of comprehensive studies on the challenges of GSCP adoption in Nigeria makes it difficult for organizations to develop effective strategies to overcome these barriers. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring the challenges of implementing green supply chain practices at Dangote Group in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the challenges faced by Dangote Group in implementing green supply chain practices in Kano State.
  2. To assess the impact of these challenges on the effectiveness of GSCP at Dangote Group.
  3. To propose strategies for overcoming the challenges of implementing GSCP at Dangote Group in Kano State.

Research Questions

  1. What challenges does Dangote Group face in implementing green supply chain practices in Kano State?
  2. How do these challenges affect the effectiveness of GSCP at Dangote Group?
  3. What strategies can be adopted to overcome the challenges of GSCP implementation at Dangote Group?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: There are no significant challenges affecting the implementation of green supply chain practices at Dangote Group in Kano State.
  2. H0: Challenges in implementing GSCP do not significantly affect their effectiveness at Dangote Group.
  3. H0: Proposed strategies do not significantly improve the implementation of GSCP at Dangote Group in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Dangote Group’s operations in Kano State and examines the challenges of implementing green supply chain practices. The research is limited to the manufacturing and industrial sector in Kano State and does not extend to other regions or industries. Limitations include potential constraints in accessing proprietary data from Dangote Group and the generalizability of findings to other companies or regions in Nigeria.

Definitions of Terms
